.Pyrographics: Fine Art In Woodburning
Pyrography is the ancient art of burning designs into wood. Today
this artform is rarely seen
.especially in the way I am
creating my work. It is a unique blend of mixed media. Having
a Fine Art background in watercolor and the printmaking technique
of etching, I have incorporated this knowledge and technique
into my woodburnings. Because of this, my creative approach to
the medium is very unique and different from the way it is usually
seen and done. I have had many comments about the airbrush quality
of my backgrounds and the intricate fineness of my lines and
detail. People also say theyve never seen anything else
like it
..that my technique is exquisitely beautiful and
captures a dimensional, realistic quality. On some pieces, a
touch of color also adds an unusual effect with the use of watercolor
or oil pencils enhancing areas of the wood, while letting the
natural grain show through. I photograph most of my own reference
material for use in sketching out my subject matter onto the
wood, and often combine several photos to create the finished
piece. A final finish of acrylic satin protects the artwork and
wood. Every step from the raw wood to the final finishing is
original and done by hand to create a unique work of art.
I am a former Disney artist. Ive studied
at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida, and have
taken workshops at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in
Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I am a current member of the National
Woodcarvers Association, the Dayton Carvers Guild and the Ohio
Arts and Crafts Guild. I have won many awards through the years
with my artwork at nationally known fine art and craft shows
and have now started receiving recognition and winning awards
with my fine art woodburnings.
I do custom work on request of any subject matter
and can create a wide variety of unique and beautiful pieces
.
Including collectors plates, containers and boxes, plaques, framed
artwork, clocks, gourds and more. |
